Monmouth University Statement Regarding Jon Bon Jovi's Speech at Commencement

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J., May 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Monmouth University is pleased to confirm that world-renowned singer and actor Jon Bon Jovi will give the commencement address and receive an honorary doctor of humanities degree at its 67th commencement ceremony on Wednesday, May 16 at 1:30 p.m. on the Great Lawn. Mr. Bon Jovi will not be performing.

Monmouth University's commencement is closed to the public and only graduates and their guests will be admitted.

The University chose Mr. Bon Jovi for this honor because of his artistic success in the world of entertainment and philanthropic generosity to the local community. He is an international celebrity who has added to the rich tradition of great rock music at the Jersey shore.

In addition to Jon Bon Jovi, Monmouth University president Dr. Rebecca Stafford will present honorary degrees to Lewis M. Eisenberg and Thomas E. Daniels along with approximately 1,000 more degrees to graduates.

Lewis M. Eisenberg, who will be awarded a doctor of laws degree, was elected chairman of the board of commissioners of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey on November 9, 1995. Prior to his election as chairman, he was a commissioner on the agency's board, having been nominated by Governor Christine Todd Whitman. The Port Authority is a bi-state, $3 billion agency with 7,200 employees. It operates major transportation facilities in the region including the World Trade Center, Newark, LaGuardia and Kennedy airports and interstate tunnels, bridges and marine terminals.

Thomas E. Daniels will receive a doctor of public service degree at commencement. Mr. Daniels is president of Management Business Support Services, a business management consulting firm. He also serves as vice president of the African American Heritage Association of Monmouth County. Mr. Daniels is co-founder, chairman of the board and co-administrator of the Program for Acceleration in Computer Science Careers (PAC) at Monmouth University, which provides free computer, math, heritage and special subject classes to minority students from local schools on Saturday mornings.
